The Hope of the World

Through this conceptual book cover design, my desire was to capture the heart of Rob Pacienza’s message: to be “in the world, not of the world” and bring light into darkness. I developed three explorations for this project:

The first concept (above) was meant to be an abstract representation of Dr. Pacienza’s vision, with a teal circle interacting with three other green circles, a subtle cross in the middle as the piece that brings these diverse pieces together.

In the second concept, I used an image incorporating the Japanese art of Kintsugi- the process of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Essentially, it is a process that takes brokenness to create something beautiful and complete, much like the process God uses to bring hope to a broken world.

In the final concept, I wanted to develop a modern type treatment with engaging colors and a minimalistic lamp image to represent bringing light to our current cultural moment.

Ultimately, the client chose option number one, but each concept was a joy to create and I was delighted with the results.
